          On Tuesday night June 19th a meeting was held in Campbells Swinford regarding the feasibility of running a women's cycling event sometime during the summer or early autumn. The main aim of such an event would be to get as many women as possible to participate and to use this cycle as a stepping stone to promote women's cycling in the province. It was agreed that in order to make this event successful, it would be vital that all categories/abilities are catered for and to this end, it was agreed that cyclist be given the option of three/four routes. Bearing this in mind and the fact that Swinford is relatively central it was proposed that consideration should be given to use the following routes;

          •
          • Swinford - Foxford - Ballylahan- Bohola - Swinford - approximately 32K
          • Swinford - Foxford - Straide - BAllyvarry - Swinford - approximately 40K
          • Swinford- Foxford- Pontoon - CAstlebar - Swinford- approximately 65K

            •
              Stronger cyclsts would be given the option of doing two loops of a route.

              Sunday September the 16th was proposed as a preliminary date for this cycle but depending on circumstances this date may be subject to change.

              Rather than listing the full details pertaining to the meeting and the subsequent proposals, the following are the main recommendations;
              the cycle should cater for all abilities.
              Persons who are not members of cycle or triathlon clubs should be encouraged to participate
              cyclists giving a choice of routes but these routes would be inter connected.
              a back-up service to be provided to assist with breakdowns and transport those who may experience difficulties.
              Prior to the cycle a presentation be made on equipment and bike repair
              On completion of the cycle refreshments would be provided
              Brief presentation on cycling activities, and how to get involved etc.
              Get some celebrity female sports person on board.
              this event should be ran as a fun day with a carnival type atmosphere.
              We believe that this event has the potential to grow from strength to strength and create an awareness which would encourage others to take up the sport. However for this to happen, it is vital that this event is fully supported by clubs and individuals alike. There is no doubt that the enthusiasm and interest is there, but it will require a special effort to get the maximum number out on the day and for this we ask that you encourage as many women cyclists as possible to participate.

              Our next meeting will be held on Monday July 2nd at 8.30pm in Campbells, Main Street, Swinford (upstairs) and we would ask that anyone with an interest in women's cycling to attend.

              Updates will be posted on www.connachtcycling.com and www.swinfordtrisports.com .

              Yours in sport
