David O'Loughlin is a professional cyclist with the Sean Kelly team for 2009. O'Loughlin rode for Ireland at world championships and many other international races on many occasions. He won the national road championship three times. He turned professional in 2002 with Ofoto-Lombardi Sports for two seasons.
O’Loughlin won the Shay Elliot Memorial race and then stage 6 of the FBD Insurance Rás. O’Loughlin finished third in the Ras stage race as teammate to David McCann. O’Loughlin. Then in June, O'Loughlin became road champion of Ireland.
In 2005 he joined fellow Irish professional Ciaran Power in the Navigators Insurance Cycling Team. He came second in the mountains classification in the Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under. Later that year, he defended his Irish road title.
In 2006, he won the Irish time trial and broke the 4km pursuit record. In 2007, he won back the Irish road champion's jersey. On October 19, 2007, O'Loughlin signed with a new Irish cycling team called Pezula cycling team.
In February 2008, he became first Irish cyclist to make a World Cup medal ride-off when he posted fourth fastest time in the pursuit qualifying session in Copenhagen. I the bronze medal ride-off, he lost to Luke Roberts.
On 12 June 2008, O'Loughlin qualified in the 4km pursuit at the Beijing Olympics. Pezula Racing equated this to Jamaica's qualifying for the bobsleigh as Ireland does not have a velodrome. O'Loughlin finished 11th in the opening rounds in a time of 4:26.102 which unfortunately meant he didn't qualify for the ride offs for a higher position.
