Bog Week GP & Gogarty Cup 2010

Prendergast Gogarty Cup, 70km

By Martin Ayres
At Tullycross, Co Galway, Sunday May 23

Charles Prendergast won Sunday’s Gogarty Cup race with a devastating uphill finish that carried him four lengths clear of last year’s winner Padraig Marrey, with Robin Kelly taking third spot.

Prendergast, who finished third in the previous day’s Connemara event, appreciated the opportunity to get in some solid preparation for next month’s U23 Nations Cup race in Canada. He was disappointed to missed out on a place in the FBD Ras, but selection for two Halfords Criteriums – London and Durham on May 25 and 27 - followed by the Quebec Nations Cup (June 3-6) was ample compensation.

The Western Lakes CC handicap event covered at 70-kilometre loop of some of Connemara’s most scenic terrain. With the front markers given a seven-minute advantage, the race didn’t come together until 15km from the Tullycross finish.

Ciaran Steed attacked with about three miles to go and looked a possible winner until being overhauled on the final climb. Steed still had sufficient strength to go with the leaders when Prendergast blew the bunch apart with a fierce attack. Just six riders were in contention as the leaders sprinted into Tullycross where Roscommon’s Gavin Keane finished fourth – one better than his previous day’s placing. Steed (Murphy Surveyors) took a hard-earned fifth place and Michael Barry (Orwell Wheelers) was sixth.
