BMX Track a big hit with bikers

Over 100 people turned up to the launch of the flood lights at the BMX track on the Kilmaine road, Ballinrobe.

John Murphy chairperson of Western Lakes CC highlighted that this work started back in 2007 has now paid dividends with large numbers from various backgrounds participating on a weekly basis.

He praised the work on Norman Walsh who coaches the 7pm Monday sessions and for Gerry Butler and Padraig Marrey for coming up with the idea, he also thanked Mayo County Council for letting the club develop the track and the South West Development company for the maintaince of the track.

He stressed that a project like this would not be in place without funding and here he thanked the input of Cllr Damien Ryan and Neil Sheridan for their help in securing monies from the Social development fund, John praised the work of JP Ryan Lee valley development who did most of the grounds work and Anthony O Toole Electrical who erected the Flood lights.

Damien Ryan in his address to the crowd stressed that tracks like this were a great community asset and hoped that similar attractions would be developed around the county.

Martin Mc Nally Chairperson of Irish Youth cycling stated that in the future he hoped to see one of the many BMX riders making it to future Olympic games.
Cllr Michael Burke Cathaoirleach Mayo County Council said that this facility was great for bringing children of all nationalities together and was grateful to be part of the project and officially switched on the lights.

Fr Conal Eustace complemented the members of the Western Lakes Cycling club for the work they have done for the promotion of a healthy activity such as cycling and went on to bless the BMX track.

Stephen Clancy former professional BMX rider with the 20 inch Ireland team performer many stunts for the crowd.
