Ballinrobe 2 Day 2008

Juniors excel in opening stage.

The Marrey bikes.com Ballinrobe 2 day again attracted the biggest field seen
in the West of Ireland this year with 99 riders starting, The Traditional
H/cap system that this race uses helped keep the racing interesting right to
the wire, where the C, Lady, Veteran , Junior and B riders get a small time
allowance on the A and International juniors riders.
Sam Bennett, Charles Prendergast, Aran Buggle and Michael Duffy showed
their seniors counter parts that gear limits and age are no barrier when its
comes to racing.
The Scratch group that these juniors were part of started some 10 minutes
behind the ladies and C group with the B and veteran riders stuck in the
middle.
It took 40 miles for the scratch group to catch all of the front runners
where KOH Leader Kenny Boyhlan from Lakeland CC lead the way from mile 12
before been swallowed up just at the finish line of sprint one where he took
2nd behind Dave Brennan of the Castlebar CC with Tom Shanahan Limerick CC
3rd , a few miles later Kenny was spat out the back of the bunch but
happy in the fact that he would start stage 2 in the Polkadot jersey as
mountains leader. Kenny also took 2pts towards the green sprints jersey .
2nd time through the line Brendan .Lacey Earl Of Desmond lead them through
with Brendan Butler of the promoting club (Western Lakes CC) showing in
front of the home crowd to get 2nd , Peter Buggle of Team WORC taking 3rd.
With just 11k to go 5 riders were out in front with a gap of 30 seconds but
Sam Bennett and Simon Coughlan who were still in the bunch had other ideas
and closed them down with just 8k to go, with 13riders up front and most
teams represented if looked as this group contained the winner.
Simon Coughlan again showed why he is European masters pursuit champion
launching a blistering attack with 500m to go, but junior Sam Bennett of Dan
Morrissey showed his class also sprinting clear of the lead group to catch
Coughlan on the line for the win. Charles Prendergast Mayo Wheelers showed
again for the juniors taking 3rd.
